Wu Da-cheng Go Taicho Wu Da-cheng [Born] 1835 (15th year of Daoguang) [Died] January 27, 1902 (28th year of Guangxu) Chinese politician, calligrapher, painter, and literati of the late Qing dynasty. Born in Wu County (Suzhou, Jiangsu Province), China. His courtesy name was Qingqing, and his art names were Hengxuan and Kexi. He passed the jinshi examination in 1868 (7th year of Tongzhi) and held the official position of Governor of Hunan. In 1894 (20th year of Guangxu), he was defeated at Shanhai Pass during the Sino-Japanese War and retired from office. He excelled in seal script from a young age and in Zhouwen (a type of ancient script) from middle age. He was also skilled in seal carving and was well-versed in the collection and appraisal of bronzes and stone inscriptions. His paintings were good at landscapes and flowers and birds, and he participated in the Pinghua Society calligraphy and painting association when he traveled to Shanghai in 1862 (1st year of Tongzhi).
