Kagura originally began as ancient people danced to pray for good health and the rejuvenation of the soul, and this ritual of soul-soothing is said to be the origin of various Shinto rituals and performing arts. The heads are made by creating a mold with clay, carefully layering Japanese paper, applying a coating of dissolved gofun (a type of white pigment), and then coloring on top. The bodies are made with a bamboo framework and covered with Japanese paper. Wires are inserted into the bodies, allowing them to be shaped as desired (see image 20). *Persimmon tannin is used to prevent insects. Please understand that these are handmade.
