This is a live-action film adaptation of the first part, "Seishun-hen" (Youth Chapter), of Tetsuya Asada's best-selling novel "Mahjong Horoki." Set in post-war Tokyo, it depicts a young man learning about life through encounters with gamblers. Illustrator Makoto Wada made his directorial debut, co-writing the screenplay with Shinichiro Sawai, the director of "Nogiku no Haka" (The Wild Chrysanthemum). Tetsu, a young man who doesn't return to school after the war and spends his days aimlessly, reunites with Joshu Tora, who taught him gambling when he was working at a factory for labor mobilization. Tetsu, taken by Tora to a chinchiro settlement, develops a strong rivalry and a strange friendship with Dosa Ken, a professional gambler he meets there. A few days later, Tetsu and Dosa Ken go to a secret casino for American soldiers... Hiroyuki Sanada stars in the film, with Takeshi Kaga, Takashi Takashina, and Shinobu Otake playing the colorful characters.
