All works are made by hand by craftsmen in the Kameido workshop, both cutting and polishing. Its technical skill and artistry have received high praise both domestically and internationally, including being selected as a gift from the Prime Minister at the Toyako Summit. What is Edo Kiriko? As the name "Edo" suggests, the origins of Edo Kiriko date back to the Edo period. It is said to have begun in 1834 (Tenpo 5) when Kyubei Kagaya, a glass merchant in present-day Nihonbashi Odenmacho, used emery to engrave patterns on the surface of glass. Kyubei Kagaya was originally a clerk at Kagaya, a manufacturer and seller of eyeglasses and "Giyaman" (glassware) in Nihonbashi Shiocho, but later learned glasswork from Kahei Izumiya in Osaka, and after returning to Edo, he opened his own business after learning the techniques of cut glass.
