Founded in 1883 by Gorozaimon Kosugi as a textile wholesaler in Hakodate, Kosugi Sangyo moved its headquarters to Tokyo in 1914 and reorganized as a corporation in 1943. In the 70s, Kosugi Sangyo signed a license agreement with Jack Nicklaus, the "Emperor" of golf, and in 1985, they began selling golf wear embroidered with his nickname, "Golden Bear." They launched various apparel lines and were listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Second Section, demonstrating a very forward-thinking corporate culture. However, after the 2000s, they went bankrupt due to the decline of department stores, their main market, and the subprime mortgage crisis.
