This is a hand-embroidered handkerchief from Swatow (Shantou). Floral pattern. Approximately 27cm. It has been stored at my grandmother's house for at least 40 years. She thinks it was purchased in Hong Kong. Although it is unused, there are some stains and yellowing due to age because the box has been discarded. (I'm not sure of the original color, but is it slightly yellowed overall...?) I have taken photos of the areas of concern, so please check them in the images. ◎About Shantou Embroidery Traditional embroidery from Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. It spread to the Shantou region after missionaries introduced European lace embroidery techniques. It has been passed down from parents to children for generations, but the number of people carrying on the tradition is decreasing due to the difficulty of handwork and the development of machine embroidery. Fine embroidery is applied all over, and it feels heavy. The spiderweb-like parts in particular are so delicate that they are mesmerizing just to look at.
