This is a high-quality fukuro obi (formal obi) featuring the "Kou-bishi" (Lucky Diamond) pattern, created by the late Takeshi Kitamura, a Living National Treasure who, after extensive training in Nishijin, Kyoto, and work on restoring ancient weaving techniques, became independent and honed his unique weaving skills. He held two Living National Treasure titles, one for "Ra" in 1995 and another for "Tate-nishiki" in 2000. The item includes the original box, obi end, and a booklet (copy) with a brief biography. "Kou-bishi" is a gorgeous pattern that skillfully arranges large and small, and yin and yang, representations of karahana-bishi (stylized diamond-shaped floral) motifs. Although difficult to see in the image, the large diamonds are arranged alternately in white and pale purple, and the gray-purple ground has a fine diamond pattern that emerges, with thin gold threads woven into it, giving off a subtle yet delicate shine, as if gold powder has been sprinkled on it. At first glance, it may seem like a simple design, but the luster of the metallic threads that shine from within the intricate weave depending on the light changes the expression of this obi, giving it depth and elegance.
