Toshichi Iwata (1893-1980) Known as a pioneer of glass artists in Japan. He became a landmark figure, leading from traditional Japanese glass products to contemporary glass art. He called his own works "getemono" (freakish things) and energetically presented avant-garde works to the world. There are also many works that are not widely known. This work is likely one of them. This is a "Glass Vase" made by Toshichi Iwata, created in 1961, titled "Mt. Fuji Spring." The inscription on the box reads: "Fuji-dake Haru, exhibited at a solo exhibition, June 1961, Toshichi Iwata's signature." ☆ I am not an expert, so my reading may be incorrect. Please understand. The black of the mountain's surface and the reddish-brown lava rocks, or perhaps the exposed lava on the surface, are reminiscent of the mountain. It also resembles the "Fat Lava" vases from Germany. In any case, I believe it expresses that Mt. Fuji is a volcano. This is a rare masterpiece created for a solo exhibition. The surface and inner glass are sandblasted to remove the gloss and eliminate the glass feel. However, the opening is polished clear to allow light to enter (light passes through as in the first photo). The irregular crater-like depressions, the distorted shape, the color scheme of mixed red, blue, and black, and the texture of the glass are all very original and highly artistic. It doesn't seem like a work from over 60 years ago. ☆ Although it is a glass vase from over 60 years ago, it is in very good condition.
