He has also served as Director General of the Defense Agency (68th and 69th), Minister of Defense (4th), Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (48th), Chairman of the Policy Research Council of the Liberal Democratic Party (52nd), Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party (50th), Minister of State for Special Missions (National Strategic Special Zones), Minister of State for Special Missions (Regional Revitalization), Chairman of the Sawarabi Kai, Advisor to the Non-Factional Liaison Council, Vice Chairman of the LDP Tobacco Diet Members' League, and Chairman of the Suigetsu Kai.
