This is a very rare violin with a skull carved into the neck. Details and maker unknown. The only information available is that it was purchased at an antique market in Europe. The label reads as follows: CATACOMBE dei CAPPUCCINI fecit Palermo An.1920 AMS logo and a cross. Branding: MEMENTO MORI(?) According to the label, it seems to mean that it was made in Palermo, Italy in 1920, and the name refers to a catacomb (?). I couldn't find any information about the logo even after searching. Judging from the varnish and the condition of the wood, it seems to be about 100 years old. I don't think it's a newly antique-finished instrument. I sometimes see carvings of lions or human faces, but I couldn't find any information or even images of a skull head. I think it's rare even on a global scale. The sound is rich in overtones and resonates well. Especially the high-pitched high positions sound clear and extended. It seems like it will become a very resonant instrument if you play it in. The body has many scratches and stains. The back plate is made of a single piece of wood, so it is not a mass-produced instrument. There is a line visible at the bottom of the back plate. It may be a crack, but there is no step when pressed. The bridge has a branding mark. It can be played as is, but I think maintenance is recommended. I don't think there are any fatal problems.
