Folding Fan Case - New, Unused Oshidori Karakusa Mon Nishiki (Mandarin Duck and Arabesque Brocade) The original Nishiki fabric was a weft brocade used as decoration at the tip of a large banner. It features a design of circular arabesques and two mandarin ducks facing each other, holding flower stems on lotus flower seats within the circles. The ground is red, and the arabesques use colored wefts of green, indigo, yellow, white, and red, with the outlines in indigo. The mandarin ducks have green, white, indigo, and yellow heads; green, white, indigo, and purple chests; green, white, indigo, purple, and yellow tail feathers; and a light green belly, making for a colorful and gorgeous brocade. The excellent design composition, beautiful color scheme, and exquisite weaving technique make it an outstanding work among the many Nishiki fabrics in the Shosoin Treasure Repository. This item faithfully reproduces the splendor of the original, woven using a warp-faced brocade technique.
