The first group begins with "Problems in Kant's Aesthetics - Focusing on the Aesthetic Idea" and "On the Aesthetic Idea" from 1948, and includes "On the Theory of Genius in Kant," which was only presented orally. Through these, Professor Imai laid the groundwork for the problem of "the development of German idealist aesthetics," which he was aiming for, and reached a conclusion with "Art and Morality" in 1985. This group concerns the interpretation of Kant's aesthetics. The second group consists of essays that attempt to examine the problem of the field in which the aesthetic idea, as the "constitutive principle of beauty," is expressed, within the context of Japanese space and time, or Japanese sensibility. The third group begins with "A Study of Primitive Art" in 1957 and develops into "The Problem of Reality in Expression." This group shows an interest in art history and life, as well as an interest in meaning or ontology, seen between the "Discovery of Images" and the development of "A Small Essay on Allegory." From this time, a unique direction of "attempting to apply the problem of imagination to the problem of Japanese sensibility" began to be shown.
