This is a beautiful piece by Junko Kitamura, embodying the essence of her craftsmanship. It is 10.5cm (4 inches) in diameter and 11cm (4.5 inches) in height, and is in good condition. Junko Kitamura studied under Osamu Suzuki and Yutaka Kondo of the Sodeisha group. Similar to Tatsuzo Shimaoka, a Mashiko artist, her work is influenced by Jomon pottery, but her approach is quite different. She carves patterns into the clay with bamboo, fires it once with black clay slip, then carefully fills the marks with white clay slip to create the patterns, and fires it again. Her works are in the collections of many museums, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Brooklyn Museum.
