Thank you for your interest. This is a suzuri (inkstone) that belonged to my grandfather, who was born in the Taisho era and, I heard, taught calligraphy. The wrapping says, in my grandfather's handwriting, "Made in China, Red Stone (High Quality)." It's an old item, but it's a suzuri that he used and kept with care. He may have bought it there, as he had been to China. The name "上石" (Ueishi) appears to be carved on the back? See photos 3 and 4.
