This is a red lacquered bowl by Shuji Ota, who lives in Ehime Prefecture. I purchased it about 30 years ago from a select shop for tableware in Hiroshima. He is a very rare craftsman who handles the entire process himself, from selecting the wood to making the wooden base and applying the lacquer, and is attracting attention. He is particular about the selection of materials, and his "warm, hand-friendly tableware" is characterized by the use of chestnut, zelkova, saw-tooth oak, and magnolia. At the Tokyo ceramic art gallery "Shibuya Kuroda Touen," the "Shuji Ota Lacquer Exhibition" is held every year at the end of the year, and it has many repeat customers, with "ease of use" and "beauty that blends into everyday life" being highly praised. This is an early work by Mr. Ota from his younger days. It is characterized by its restrained and beautiful finish, and it is a generous and easy-to-use bowl. It has been used only a few times, but there are small scratches and short, thin lines due to storage, which are visible upon close inspection. They are not noticeable at first glance. I believe it is a substantial bowl that conveys the warmth of Mr. Ota's lacquerware. Please note that the server is not included.
