This is a wooden natsume (tea caddy). It has a beautiful wood grain and a square, pillar-like shape. It's an unusual-shaped natsume. It might also be usable as a small item container. The words "Meikyo Shisui" (Mirror-like Still Water) are written on it. I don't know the details, but it seems the natsume was made by a sashimono carpenter (a type of joinery craftsman), and the calligraphy was done by an artist who exhibits at prefectural art exhibitions.
