Seigan Yanagawa (梁川星巌) A master of Chinese poetry who was active in the late Edo period. Along with Rai Sanyo, a Confucian scholar, painter, and poet who was active at the same time and with whom he was close, he is one of the most representative poets of the Edo period, also known as "Sanyo of prose, Seigan of poetry." In his later years, he was a central figure in the Sonno Joi movement (revere the Emperor, expel the barbarians) and was regarded as a dangerous person by the shogunate. However, he died of cholera just before the Ansei Purge. He was friends with Toko Fujita, Shozan Sakuma, and others, and later moved to Kyoto and advocated the Sonno Joi movement.
