This is a treasured sanshin, passed down 40 years ago to a master of the Nomura-ryu Ongaku Hozonkai from an acquaintance. The maker is unknown, but it is a very fine and dignified instrument. At first glance, it appears to be a Yonashi type, but considering the construction of the dove-shaped chest, it is likely a Makabe type. It shares characteristics with the work of a famous craftsman from the former Kainan Ohdori. The neck is slightly thicker. The Yaeyama black wood Ujira pattern is magnificent (see image). The karakui (tuning pegs) have been repaired and used over time, with the tips having broken off. The lacquer has fine scratches and signs of use. The neck alone weighs approximately 500g.
