This is a superfine sesame oil soot ink, smooth and with good flow. It produces a jet-black color when used thickly, and a black-brown with red undertones when used thinly, resulting in crisp lines. Suitable for kana, kanji, and sutra copying, but can also be used for line drawings. "Menpeki Kunen" refers to the story of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, who meditated facing a wall for nine years. During those nine years, Bodhidharma lost the use of his limbs. This story was brought to Japan, and the "daruma" doll was created. The ink stick features a picture of a "daruma" on the back. The meaning of the story is to focus on one thing (practice) with a clear mind.
