A Hon-bukuro obi (本袋帯) is a fukuro obi woven from the beginning in a tubular shape, without weaving the outer and inner fabrics separately. It is characterized by its thinness, lightness, suppleness, and excellent comfort when tied, as there are no seams at either end. Since the pattern cannot be seen during the weaving process, it requires a high level of skill and is considered a very rare obi of high quality. Characteristics and details of Hon-bukuro obi Seamless construction: While regular fukuro obi (sewn fukuro) are made by sewing the outer and inner fabrics together, Hon-bukuro obi are woven in a "tubular" shape, so there are no seam allowances at the edges. Comfortable to wear: There are no bumps from seams, and the outer and inner fabrics are integrated, making it less burdensome even when worn for long periods and less likely to loosen. High level of skill: Weavers must weave without being able to see the pattern, requiring advanced skills, and production numbers are very low. Uses: Primarily for formal occasions, it can be paired with tomesode, furisode, and houmongi, but some can also be used as share-bukuro obi with tsumugi and komon.
