She was born in Lima, Peru, and was the first saint in the Americas. Her family was wealthy, but they became poor after a major loss in business. Rose helped her parents from a young age by growing flowers and doing needlework such as embroidery. She refused to marry, and to avoid being pursued by men, she rubbed pepper and lime on her beautiful face to make herself unattractive. At the age of twenty, she took a vow of chastity and joined the Dominican Order. She spent much time in prayer while practicing asceticism, such as fasting and wearing a crown of thorns on her head. While living a life like a hermit, she never forgot her compassion for the poor, slaves, and indigenous people. And after self-sacrifice, she died at the young age of 31. Many people from all over Lima attended her funeral, and the archbishop gave a eulogy.
