● Old Woman As the name "Old Woman" suggests, this mask represents the face of an elderly woman. In Noh, unlike the "Uba" (Old Woman) mask, it primarily depicts the aged Ono no Komachi. Ono no Komachi, once praised as a woman of unparalleled beauty, was nearing one hundred years old and had become a sight that was difficult to bear. The Noh play "Sekidera Komachi" is based on the setting of her living in a hermitage near Sekidera Temple, far from the capital, and surviving on the charity of the local people. The "Old Woman" mask reflects this desolate appearance of Komachi. Her eyes are no different from those of a regular female mask, and her cheeks are completely gaunt with messy painted eyebrows, but unlike the "Uba" mask, it lacks wrinkles, presenting a calm appearance. The mask still retains a hint of Komachi's former refinement and beauty. It is a fitting mask for the "Old Woman" in "Sekidera Komachi" and "Omu Komachi," as well as for "Sotoba Komachi," which depicts her in a state of madness.
