Around 1860-1880 Baccarat's opaline crystal glass is so named because it resembles the gemstone opal, and it was originally produced as a substitute for porcelain, and therefore used for decorative items, making it a very rare piece. During the Restoration period, elegant decorative art became popular, and opaline glass works that could be painted were produced. The light blue opaline crystal glass body is hand-painted with a wonderful design, and this piece is strongly influenced by Japanese taste (Japonism). The painting is thought to be the work of a Sèvres painter from the time.
