The Hmong (Miao) people are an ethnic minority group living in the mountainous regions of southwestern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Each place they live and each tribe has its own distinctive embroidery, indigo dyeing, and other characteristics. This item was purchased from a Hmong person in Bangkok, Thailand, over 30 years ago. This long jacket is made from Hmong hand-woven cotton fabric, with traditional patterns drawn using indigo batik, and then traditional embroidery and patchwork are applied. The size is unisex, and when a woman wears it, it will feel like a half coat. This is a work of the first generation of people who realized that their ethnic traditional fabrics could be used worldwide, and came down from the mountains to commercialize their ethnic embroidery. The fabric used was already old at the time. It features intricate embroidery and patchwork that are rarely seen in Thailand today. As it uses old fabric, there may be stains and fraying. Also, as it is an early work, the construction is different from modern items, and there may be some distortion, but it is a handmade work with warmth.
