Ogyu Sorai (March 21, 1666 – February 28, 1728) A Confucian scholar, thinker, and philologist of the mid-Edo period. His real name was "Shigeaki," and his courtesy name was "Mokei," which was read as "Shigenori" for his real name. The pen name "Sorai" comes from the "Sorai no Matsu" in the *Book of Songs*, meaning "pine trees flourish," and it is pointed out that it is a name related to pine trees, along with "Shigeaki," which means "flourishing." His original family name was Mononobe, and he also used the pen names "Bussorai" and "Mononobe Shigeaki."
