About Elgin and its History Elgin was established in 1864 as the National Watch Company, inviting engineers from Waltham to mechanically produce pocket watches. At one point, Elgin produced half of the pocket watches made in America, and like Waltham, it was a major manufacturer that supported the American watch market. Unfortunately, the actual factory closed in 1964, and only the brand name remains for the current Elgin, which has no real connection to the Elgin that exists as an antique.
