His depictions of landscapes and people, while seemingly ordinary, dramatically express the shadows of loneliness and the individual dramas within them. Born in Nyack, New York, he aspired to be a painter from a young age. He attended a commercial art school and later studied painting at the New York School of Art. There, he met Robert Henri, a teacher at the school and a leading painter of the Ashcan School, also known as the "Ashcan School."
