It is the oldest in Akiu, and it is said to have begun in 808 (Daido 3) when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, the Seii Taishogun, enshrined Kumano Shrine here during the subjugation of the Emishi. It is said that Taira no Morifusa, the ancestor of the Akiu clan, who ruled this land during the Muromachi period, and who was wandering in Yamagata, prayed to Suwa Taisha in Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) for the recovery of his homeland and the recapture of his castle, and his wish was granted, and he was able to obtain the divine virtue of victory in battle. After that, it is said that the divine spirit of Suwa Shrine was enshrined here, and since then, it has come to be worshiped as the "God of War." In 1909 (Meiji 42), by the Imperial decree of Emperor Meiji, the divine spirits of the five villages in Akiu were enshrined together. And, the name of Suwa Shrine was changed to Akiu Shrine.
