Yakusugi cedar endures for over a thousand years in harsh natural conditions, making tremendous efforts to survive. Growing in soil with very few nutrients results in extremely narrow annual rings. To withstand long-term decay, it stores oil within itself. This oil is what gives the work its deep color. I hope to share in the longevity of Yakusugi. Yakusugi cedar grows on Yakushima Island, a granite island with poor nutrients. Its growth is slow, resulting in tight grain. Due to high rainfall and humidity, it contains a lot of resin, making it resistant to decay. Therefore, the trees have long lifespans. Trees that grow in mountainous areas above 500m and are over 1000 years old are called Yakusugi. Currently, new logging is prohibited. It is a rare and auspicious wood, also said to ward off bad luck ("yaku ga sugiru" - "to pass over misfortune"). Coated with impregnating urethane coating (Kigame Ace), so it's safe even if you sweat. It meets food sanitation standards. Please care for it with a soft cloth made of silk or cotton. It is not as hard as a metal ring, so please handle it with care during use.
