Sadayoshi Oba (Sadamitsu Oba) was one of the seven artists exhibited at the NHK Sapporo Planning Exhibition "Hokkaido Traveling with Wood-Carved Bears" held at the NHK Sapporo Broadcasting Station from March 17th to March 26th, 2023, two years ago. * Works by seven artists were exhibited: Takeki Fujito, Sadayoshi Oba (Sadamitsu Oba), Shigeyuki Shibazaki, Seiji Horii, Ebere Kawamura, and two anonymous artists. The wood-carved owl I am offering for sale was purchased directly from Mr. Sadayoshi Oba, the owner of the Oba Wood Carving Mingei store, when I visited Hakodate Goryokaku on a trip to Hokkaido on July 29, 1990, 35 years ago. There were many wood-carved owls, and I could buy a wood-carved owl of just an owl cheaply, but when I was hesitating, Mr. Oba said, "This owl is expensive, but it has value. The Japanese pagoda tree (enju) is lucky." With those words, I chose this owl. The Japanese pagoda tree (enju) is said to be a "tree that brings happiness" because it is associated with longevity, and it is said to bring benefits for longevity, safe childbirth, success, and warding off evil, and it has been familiar as a lucky tree since ancient times.
