These are rocks and stones inscribed with sutras and mantras. They convey the feeling that the Buddha is always present and watching over you, no matter where you are. They range from those inscribed on rocks to small ones that individuals can carry. ■ What is the Six-Syllable Mantra? In the Himalayas, when removing the bodies of those who have perished in disasters from the mountains, the local mantra "Om - ma - ni - pad - me - hum" (オン - マ - ニ - パド - メ - フン), composed of six syllables, is recited. Because it is a mantra expressing the compassion of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, it is also called the Avalokiteśvara Six-Syllable Mantra. Especially in Tibet, where the Dalai Lama is considered an incarnation of Avalokiteśvara, it is often chanted by the people.
