This is a plate from Koizagoyaki, produced in present-day Nakagawa, Tochigi Prefecture, in the northeastern part of Tochigi Prefecture. Koizagoyaki began production in 1854 when Mito feudal lord Nariaki Tokugawa ordered Hanzaburo Fujita and Hikozaburo Okane to start production. Hikozaburo Okane seems to have later produced and sold general-purpose pottery for the public in this area. This item is marked with the inscription "Hikozaburo" on the foot, and is a plate for the public produced by Hikozaburo Okane. Old general-purpose Koizagoyaki pottery is rare, and it is uncommon for it to appear on the market. Also, although it is characterized by gold crystal glaze, looking at the iron glaze on the foot side of this item, it is colored in small crystalline shapes, which may have been the origin of the gold crystal glaze.
