I've used a slice of a chinquapin tree as a display stand. It has been planed with a machine to ensure it's level. Both the front and back surfaces are generally smooth. It's a natural object. Perfect as an accent piece for your room, allowing you to feel the warmth of the wood. It has been two years since the tree was felled. I don't think it will crack any further. Although it is unused, please refrain from purchasing if you are sensitive to items stored at home. It will be shipped in a recycled cardboard box.
