A cardigan is a simple, boxy knit jacket with an open front. Originally, it had buttons and no collar, with a round or V-shaped neckline, and the front opening and neckline were continuously trimmed with a band. It usually has long sleeves, but there are also short-sleeved versions for women's and children's clothing. The word "cardigan" comes from the 7th Earl of Cardigan (James Brudenell). During the Crimean War from 1853, the 7th Earl of Cardigan of the British Army had sweaters modified to open in the front and fasten with buttons, which he wore over his uniform for warmth, and this is where the cardigan originated.
