They can be washed and are clean. With previous zori, the middle part was closed, and my little toe would sometimes stick out a bit. I've changed where it closes on these. They also have overall stability. The back is also carefully finished. You'll understand how good they are when you wear them. If they're too tight or loose, the thong is tied at two points on the back of the zori.
