These are carved chess pieces made by the master carver Gekko, with the wood being Mikurajima Tsumugi-gaya Masame, and the script being the popular Genbei Kiyoyasu. I purchased these unused a few years ago and have kept them for display, never having placed them on a board. I have also regularly aired them out and wiped them down, so I believe they are in the same condition as when I purchased them. The quality of the carving is superb, and the wood has an elegant masame grain, so I believe these pieces are suitable for both display and practical use.
