This is a sometsuke (blue and white) plate purchased at an antique market. I was drawn to the unusual design and brought it home. The roots are also depicted. Plants with roots symbolize taking root in the land and wishing for a stable life and growth. The pine branches used in New Year's decorations are a good example. They are considered auspicious objects, representing building a foundation for life and achieving a stable state. They would be a stylish gift for someone starting a new life or changing their environment. There are two "nyu" (hairline cracks) in the plate.
