Akasaka clay figurines are said to have been made as a side job by ceramic artisans. Also known as "tetepoppo" (meaning clumsy or awkward), many of them are whistles, and they have been popular as children's toys and folk art. The production technique is simple: clay is packed into a female mold, the halves are joined, and then removed from the mold and fired as is. Therefore, the seams are protruding, which is a characteristic feature. The unglazed pottery is coated with rice flour and colored with food coloring such as red, yellow, and blue, giving it a unique simplicity, flavor, and heartwarming warmth. It is said that several doll shops once made dozens of types of dolls, but now only Akasaka Ame Honpo remains, and they make dozens of types in the traditional way.
