Dr. Robert Ballard's challenge was to find and photograph the ships sunk in the Battle of Midway, one of the most dramatic battles of the Pacific War. After the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, the Japanese Navy seemed almost unstoppable, and Admiral Yamamoto planned a final attack on Midway Island in June 1942. However, the U.S. military, who knew of the plan, prepared for the attack and achieved a great victory, sinking three of the four Japanese aircraft carriers while losing only one. This battle became a turning point in the Pacific War, and Japan never went on the offensive again. The story of this battle is told through underwater photographs of the aircraft carrier's remains taken by Ballard and moving paintings by Ken Marshall.
