The Kyoto Daimaru Gofukuten (a kimono shop) had been located at Higashinotoin Funayacho since 1736, but moved to its current location at Shijo Karasuma in 1912. This is a gold leaf sake cup that was distributed to related parties as a commemorative item of the move. I used to own the box for this cup, so I know its origin. It was made from the pine wood of the main pillar of the Daimaru Gofukuten when it was located at Higashinotoin. As expected of the prestigious Daimaru, the carved pine wood was finished with a wiped lacquer. The base of the cup was reinforced with a fabric grain, and then black lacquer and gold leaf were applied and polished, resulting in an elegant and refined piece worthy of its name. It's also quite nice to drink sake from this cup when celebrating or when you just want to lift your spirits. Large size: approximately 12.4 cm in diameter, 4.1 cm in height. Medium size: approximately 10.6 cm in diameter, 3.6 cm in height. Small size: approximately 8.8 cm in diameter, 3.2 cm in height.
