I painted this using watercolors, inspired by the "iga-mochi" (chestnut rice cakes) seen at festivals in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This is a large, square piece. Painted with watercolors on Mermaid paper. From the name "Mermaid paper," I imagined mermaids, and created original characters, Lala the mermaid and Rele, her sea slug friend. They got lost in the Seto Inland Sea and encountered local specialties and scenery, which I depicted in this painting. Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind. "Iga-mochi," the taste of the festival! A chewy treat given to them by humans. Rele and Lala don't know about festivals yet, but maybe they can go someday.
