This is a hand-embroidered handkerchief from Swatow (Shantou). Featuring flowers and butterflies. Approximately 27cm. The entire surface is covered with fine embroidery, giving it a substantial feel. It has been stored at my grandmother's house for at least 40 years. She believes it was purchased in Hong Kong. Although it is unused, there are some age-related stains because the box was discarded. I have taken photos of the areas of concern, so please check them in the images. ◎ About Shantou Embroidery Traditional embroidery from Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. It spread in the Shantou region after missionaries introduced European lace embroidery techniques. It has been passed down from parents to children for generations, but the difficulty of handwork and the development of machine embroidery have led to a decline in the number of people carrying on the tradition.
