The back of the inkstone is engraved with "Wakada Stone, Gensho Saku" (Made by Gensho). It was made by Saito Gensho of Saimo-do, which was located in Tsushima. Wakada inkstones are made from stone from Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture. There is a legend that Murasaki Shikibu used it when writing The Tale of Genji. I don't know if it's related to the legend, but it's an inkstone suitable for kana (Japanese syllabary), and ink wash painting. Moreover, it has been tuned for this purpose. Inkstones are not determined by the name of the stone or the maker alone. Even if a popular artist uses a poorly made stone, the inkstone will sell. That's why the quality of the inkstone is poor. But if a good stone is used, it becomes a good inkstone. Stone quality, technique, and will. It depends on these factors. Therefore, you have to look at each inkstone individually. It's a mistake to judge based on something else. This is a good stone among Wakada stones. It grinds ink exceptionally well, with a fine grain, and the ink spreads well, producing a good ink color. It's excellent with oil soot ink. It's quite good with pine soot ink. Suitable for kana (up to full-size paper), kanji (up to half-size paper), and ink wash painting.
