This item came to Japan from the late Edo period to the Meiji period and was also called "youtou" (Western lamp). It has a glass shade to protect the flame from the wind, and the brightness of the flame can be adjusted by changing the length of the wick with the adjusting screw. The glass part alone is lovely as a single-flower vase or as part of an interior design. I purchased it at an antique market a few years ago for 7800 yen.
