Member of the Japan Academy. He entered the Department of Indian Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University and studied under Junjiro Takakusu with Taiken Kimura. After graduating, he studied abroad at the University of Tübingen in Germany and the University of Oxford in England, and became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University upon his return to Japan. He also taught at Keio University, Waseda University, Gakushuin University, Nagoya University, and was appointed president of Komazawa University. Awarded the Japan Academy Prize. His disciple was Hajime Nakamura. His publications include "Studies in Indian Philosophy," "Buddhist Logic," "Commentary on the Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only," and "Selected Works of Hakuju Ui" (in 6 volumes), among others.
