You can wear them separately. I think it would be warm to wear just the jacket on top in spring and autumn, and the set in winter. I don't think there is much overall soiling, but the Velcro on the sleeves has come off. I think it would be fine if you sew it, but please refrain from purchasing if you are looking for perfection.
