The mechanism is a ratchet type (the gray part in the center switches direction), and it works at 4x speed if you hold the black part with your other hand to prevent it from turning while you rotate it. It can be rotated at 4x speed, and head replacement is smooth. When tightening, you can feel the torque with your hand, unlike with electric ones, and it's excellent because it's not bulky compared to things like a bamboo dragonfly.
