I am offering a set of three vintage Chinese special stamps, "Romance of the Western Chamber." Catalog Number: T.82 Issue Date: February 21, 1983 Issuing Authority: Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, People's Republic of China "Romance of the Western Chamber" is a Zaju play by Wang Shifu of the Yuan Dynasty, a love story depicting the scholar Zhang Junrui and the daughter of a prime minister, Cui Yingying, overcoming obstacles with the help of the maid Hongniang, and eventually uniting. It vividly expresses criticism of feudal etiquette and the view that "all people with affection should be together." The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China issued these special stamps to honor this outstanding classical literature. Stamp 1 (left) is titled "Astonishment." The design depicts Zhang Junrui visiting the Puji Temple on his way to the capital to take the imperial examination, where he accidentally meets Cui Yingying, the daughter of the prime minister. Stamp 2 (center) is titled "Listening to the Zither." The design depicts Zhang Junrui playing the zither in a room in the Western Chamber, expressing his hidden feelings to Cui Yingying through the melody. Stamp 3 (right) is titled "Happy Reunion." The design depicts Cui Yingying secretly visiting the Western Chamber with the help of the maid Hongniang, and making a vow of lifelong commitment with Zhang Junrui.
