Studied design at the Arnhem Academy of Art from 1988 to 1992. Since 1986, he has developed a unique concept called "Self-Portrait as a Building." He creates sculptures and objects placed in this imagined room, presenting them as a series of installations. In 1998, he co-founded the publishing house "Roma Publications" with Roger Willems, producing his own artist books and exhibition catalogs, as well as books by other artists. The artist's representative work, a fictional newspaper, is also produced by this publisher. His exhibitions include participation in numerous international exhibitions such as the São Paulo Biennial (1998), Documenta 11 (2002), and the Venice Biennale (2013). He has held many solo exhibitions, including a European tour from 2008 to 2009 and an American tour in 2011. A large-scale solo exhibition was held at the Bonnefanten Museum in the Netherlands in 2020. In recent years, he has created large-scale outdoor sculptures for the Public Art Fund program (2019, Central Park, New York, USA) and Roelof Hartplein (2017, Amsterdam, Netherlands). Major exhibitions in Japan include "Territory: Contemporary Art from the Netherlands" at the Opera City Art Gallery (2000, Tokyo), which included "Tokyo Newspaper," "Aichi Triennale" (2016, Aichi), and "Michael Borremans Mark Manders Double Silence" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2020, Ishikawa).
