【M-044】 This katakuchi tsubo (one-sided mouth jar) is a type of old pottery with a simple and powerful texture, and has characteristics seen in Japanese folk art and old pottery. The mouth is made as a spout (katakuchi) on one side, and the overall shape is a rounded jar. Ears (handles): There are small, protruding ears on the shoulder. Glaze: It is covered with a brown to black-brown glaze containing a lot of iron, and you can also see bluish-green parts due to kiln changes. Overall, it has a natural glaze like ash-covered. Texture/Color: The glaze is applied, and it has a simple texture that retains the feel of the clay. The color has components included in the clay during firing, as well as scorch marks and mottled patterns, with brown, gray, and greenish hues. The surface feels smooth, as if it has been coated. Surface pattern: The horizontal lines (rokuro-me) created when shaping with a potter's wheel are clearly visible on the surface. Firing: Shrinkage and crack patterns (nyūnyū) due to high-temperature firing can be confirmed. Similar to practical pottery from the medieval to early modern periods in Japan, such as old Seto and Bizen, it has the atmosphere of being a miscellaneous vessel from before the Edo period (around the Muromachi to Momoyama periods).
